Obama’s Abortion Care

Yes

By Dio Norkett – staff writer

With the changing of the times, we face a changing of opinions. Not everybody agrees with abortion. The proposal to have abortion covered by healthcare has been frowned upon by many, but those who oppose are mostly pro-life. This proposal does not make abortion right. The government would not tell females what to do with their bodies. The bill would simply help low income women pay for abortions.

The most clear-cut issue for getting an abortion is rape, incest and the risk of health complications to the mother. The house legislation would require that healthcare pay for abortion stemming from those causes.

The second biggest issue is human opinion. First off, just because it is paid for does not mean it is forced. Neither a house nor a senate bill can affect a women’s employer-provided plan, which many do cover abortion.

The choice of a mother to have an abortion should be just that, the choice of the mother. The number one advocates for abortions are groups like Right to Life and Prolife America.

Pro-choice is the belief that the mother has the right to choose to abort a baby from their body.  The “pro-choice” view is that a baby does not have human rights within the mother’s womb. The people of the United States never voted on or supporting this pro-choice position. It was actually the Supreme Court that “legalized” abortion as a result of Roe vs. Wade in January 1973.

Since the decision in 1973, abortion has become one of the safest medical procedures in the country. By keeping abortion legal, the government protects the lives and the safety of women facing unplanned pregnancies.

Pro-choice abortion allows women to choose how to abort an unwanted child. Typically, the abortion method is determined by the age of the fetus. During the first trimester of growth, a woman may elect to use the “morning after pill.” After the first 3 months the abortion method is abortion dilation and curettage. In the last trimester, a woman can have a partial birth abortion.

The facts are clear; abortion puts you at risk both medically and morally. The question on whether or not the government should be involved in abortion should be an obvious yes, but the two main bills (so far) do not have a plan to require the coverage of abortion.

While anti-abortion activists frequently claim that abortions are unsafe, in fact both surgical and medical abortions have extremely high rates of safety. 97% of women obtaining surgical abortion before 13 weeks report no complications, 2.5% have minor complications that can be handled at the medical office or the abortion facility, and less than 0.5% have serious complications that require some additional surgical procedures and/or hospitalization. Rates of adverse events for medical abortion are also very low.

Some argue that the cost of abortion is a big burden that the government does not need.

The abortion pill can cost between $300-800, but it is safe and effective and it is available from many Planned Parenthood clinics.

Without publicly funded family planning services, an estimated 1.3 million additional unplanned pregnancies would occur annually, in turn 632,300 of those pregnancies would end in abortion.

Opponents of abortion often portray abortion as a negative problem that society should try to eliminate. While the government works to try to reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies, abortion is a valid and acceptable reproductive choice. For most women who have made this choice, abortion is not the problem, but is a life-affirming solution to the problem of the unplanned pregnancy.

The government is in place to help lead the people in the right direction.

No

By Emma Blanchard – opinions editor

584,000 unintended pregnancies ended every year by the hands of Planned Parent alone and now the government wants to pay for it, helping women who chose to end their pregnancy through abortion.

The rising controversy has been with Obama’s proposal to set aside money from the government for abortion coverage provided by health insurance companies.

The question is if the government should be handing over funds to women who choose abortion and whether this shows that the government supports abortions.

Over the years, abortion has seemed to become the touchiest and most controversial political debate since the 1920’s when women received the right to vote.

Women have become independent and are able to make their own decisions. However, the government should not be funding abortions.

People argue that women have a choice, that their voice deserves to be heard. Who then stands for the voice of the child whose life is being terminated.

Others say what if the pregnancy is harmful to the mother, or if she was raped. According to The Center for Bio-Ethical Reform, those only account for seven percent of abortions and the remaining 93 percent of abortions are for “social reasons (i.e. the child is unwanted or inconvenient).”

Not only do abortions kill the living fetus, but are also detrimental to the women’s health. This can lead to many complications later in life when trying to start a family.

Planned Parenthood, one of the largest and most popular abortion supporters states, “Abortion is a safe and legal way to end pregnancy.” Key word here is legal. The government has already supported abortion enough simply with the legalization. They also state that one in every three women will have an abortion by the age of 45.

Money should not be provided for the termination of a pregnancy when according to the U.S National Debt Clock,  the government is already in 15,435,858,904,018.08 dollars in public debt. Adding abortion coverage in this state of the economy would only cause more debt.

The money should be given to cancer patients who are struggling to make payments while fighting the number one cause of death in America. Cancer is not a choice, abortion is.

Planned Parenthood is proud to state that its “work” is to “help prevent more than 584,000 unintended pregnancies each year.” That is 584,000 lives that have been taken; only 40,880 are on the account of rape, incest or health issues for the mother.

Virginia has already passed laws on its way to making abortions illegal in the state, the government should follow suit. Think of the money that could go elsewhere. Maybe the government should raise the prices of “optional” procedures. There should be no government funding for medical choices.

Other states are following suit: Idaho, Iowa, Utah, Louisiana, Kansas, Virginia, Mississippi, Indiana, Ohio and South Dakota have all started making laws banning abortions under certain circumstances.

According to alternet.org, Ohio has banned all abortions in which the fetus has a heartbeat.

However, many women find themselves driving to Detroit and other surrounding cities to avoid the hassle of Ohio abortion laws.

Obama’s health reform should not be aiding those who are making a choice to terminate their pregnancy. The money should go to those who have a necessary need, not by choice. By the government paying for abortions it shows that the government supports the act of killing innocent lives.

The government should not take a stance on abortions in the sense of supporting or promoting it. The United States is already far into debt and it cannot take any unnecessary hand-outs.

Society gets connected

Yes

By Haleigh Welch – staff writer

Society has adopted technology into everyday life. Rarely can someone be found that does not have a cell phone in their pocket and computer or game system at home.

Technology is causing society to be more violent and socially awkward. Games are allowing violence to be accepted and sending a text is becoming easier than having personal conversation.

The first successful video game started with the Atari and simple games such as Pong. The only goal was to bounce a ball back and forth between two “paddles”.

Studies have found that these games can lead to violent behavior, because they allow the player to be interactive and confront the aggressor in the game.

Take Columbine High School for example.

It is unknown why Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold attacked in 1999. However, according to Harris’ parents, they enjoyed playing a game called Doom, which is issued by the U.S. military to train soldiers in combat.

Harris had even customized the game on his computer to where there were two shooters with extra guns and unlimited ammunition. They also made a video tape for a class project similar to this.

A week after this project, Harris and Klebold attacked, killing 13 and wounding 23, before turning the guns on themselves.

If the boys had not have been allowed to play these violent games the outcome may have been a little different.

Violence has also made its way into the internet with things like cyber bullying.

The iSafe foundation has found that 1 in 3 students have received cyber threats online. Well over half of these refuse to tell their parents about the bullying.

These unresolved problems could end in depression, anxiety and possible suicide.

Problems with the internet do not just end with bullying. Prolonged exposure to computers can be hard on both the eyes body; it also may cause some people to lose sight of reality.

Computers have also opened up a wide array of porn sites, including child pornography, which makes it a lot easier for predators of all types to find vulnerable victims.

Online child safety group, Puresight, recorded that there are 644,865 registered sex offenders in the U.S. and nearly 10,000 of these people have been lost in the system.

36% of dual offenders showed or gave pornography to identified victims or undercover investigators posing as minors, however many of these go unreported.

This does not stop with just computers. Texting has become a huge hobby in teens and adults alike.

Along with texting comes the ability to send nude pictures and sexual messages. This is more commonly known as sexting and is growing in the teen population.

In a survey taken by The Nation Campaign, nearly 20% of all teenagers have sent nude or half nude pictures and 39% have sent sexually suggestive messages.

Along with this, teenagers who have had access to cell phones and texting for a while find it much easier to communicate through texting or instant messaging.

According to psychologist Dania Diaz, texting ruins social interaction, writing skills and expression, and may cause sleep disorders. It also makes everything very impersonal.

Future generations will continue to lose communication skills and become more socially introverted.

In turn, the advances that have been and will be made in society will continue to hurt the human population for years to come.

From the first spark of fire to the plough to the newest iPad, technology has enhanced society.

By definition, technology is the total knowledge and skills available to any human society for industry, art, science and more. Throughout history, society has often shunned the newest advances, but they were later accepted.

Many have opposed technological advances, saying that they will eventually hinder human’s abilities. Instead, they are helping humans for the good and making lives easier.

Many people searched for ways to make their lives easier. Those people later became inventors who created contraptions to help with their lives, and they often stumbled upon them on accident. One discovery was the telephone. According to Gartner, Inc. this invention is used by over five billion people out of a world population of over six billion,

Alexander Graham Bell created this remarkable device because his wife was deaf  and he was trying to help deaf people hear well.

In a study conducted by the Lemelson-MIT Program in 1999, 300 high school students and 300 of their parents were surveyed about what was the most significant invention of the 20th century.

The survey found that “according to 34% of students and 27% of their parents, the computer is the single most important invention of the 20th century, garnering 31% of the combined vote.”

Technology was not just created during the 20th century, however. Inventions and discoveries have occurred throughout history, since the dawn of time.

According to former archaeologist K. Kris Hurst, the controlled use of fire was a discovery of the Early Stone Age.

Fire then improved the lives of those living back then. It helped spark the flame of discovery.  It helps with the sanitation of food, adding light, clearing spaces for settlements, creating tools, and making ceramic pots and plates.

There is no way that fire cannot be seen as an advancement for society since it helped with the creation of cities, because people could now travel.

After seeking ways to create metal buildings, the Bessemer Process was discovered. It allowed for the mass-production of steel, which was used for ships, buildings and bridges.

Without this one invention, all of the monuments, cities and transportation that are in the world today would not be here.

Technology helped with the creation of many thoughts as well as the circulation of these thoughts.

Back in the early 1900s, housewives would have to spend all day on housework such as laundry, cooking and cleaning.

To help ease these hinders, inventions such as the microwave, washing machine and electric oven were created. These creations have been used for so long and by so many that they seem to be a necessity of life.

All of the people complaining about technology use it to get their ideas into the world. These complaints against technology could not be as widespread without the use of the internet and computers.

Just by those factors alone it is safe to say that those people are hypocrites. If someone is going to complain about how they think technology has not helped society, then they should not use it all, or at least to the extent people are today.

Technology has helped society in so many ways. Just think about how the world would be without computers and cellphones. Therein lies the answer.

The new “Civil Rights” movement

By Derek Crowe – staff writer

Almost everyone in these modern times has used the word gay in reference to something being stupid or as an insult to someone doing something they think is stupid. For some people of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community (LGBT) find the use of this term offensive.

People who use gay instead of stupid or dumb are completely ignorant. When they call a thing “gay” that is politically incorrect.

According to Gay, Lesbian, Straight, Education Network (GLSEN) 72.4% of students reported hearing homophobic remarks such as “faggot,” “dyke” or “gay”. The word gay is thrown around and used as a reference to something being “stupid” or “dumb.” To find this out all any person has to do is listen in on the common high school conversation and the word is thrown around like its nothing, some people don’t even realize they use it.

The actual meaning to the word gay is something joyful or happy and it has been used in that meaning since the 14th century. Gay is now associated with homosexuality.

Society itself has changed many meanings of things. So maybe it is not just people that are to blame for the use of words, society as a whole is to blame. Everyone has a choice of what words they want to use and some people choose to use the word gay in a different way than what it actually means.

Also in recent times the phrase “that’s Jewish” has been popping up in conversation. Using this phrase is the exact same as saying something is gay. They do not know what the people of the LGBT community go through.

Certain people in the world are looked down upon just because of who they are.  This is wrong, how can someone be discriminated for who they are. This is the new civil rights movement in America. If we as a country can get over discriminating someone over skin color, then we can get over peoples sexuality.

This is the new civil rights moment because of what is happening to make the LGBT community be accepted in their own country. There have been bills passed in congress to eliminate policies such as kicking someone out of the military for being lesbian, gay, and bisexual. The time is now, and the stage is set for it all to happen.

People from all walks of life are supporting this movement. From everyday normal people to celebrities like Lady GaGa, Elton John, Janet Jackson, and many more, who support the LGBT community.

Our culture changes and things come and go through time. For all we know the phrase “that’s gay” could be thrown out by tomorrow. Tends come and go, hopefully for the people who are bashed with these harmful phrases and it means something to them when they are used that society burns them out of existence.

Pierce finishes high school strong

Deondre Pierce going for a shot.

By Luke Manser – staff writer

Senior basketball player, Deondre Pierce, is known by many due to his skills on the court and his perseverance in the classroom.

Pierce is the power forward, shooting forward and center for the WHS Hurricane and is a “versatile and talented player,” according to teammate Adrien Brooks.

However, Pierce was not always in the spotlight. His athletic journey started in 8th grade when his uncle motivated him to pursue the game because it could open doors for him.

“My uncle gave me the motivation to play basketball. He told me how it open doors for me, for college, and help me develop my work ethic,” Pierce said.

Pierce started relatively late compared to other members of the team, yet he still plays at a high level which has earned him much respect according to his teammates.

“The fact Dre started in 8th grade and has become a great baller in such a short period of time just shows how good this guy’s work ethic is,” Brooks said.

After many years of playing, Pierce began to develop quite a love for the game.

According to Pierce, he loves the competitive nature, the passion people have about it and the fun he has.

The Hurricane’s record is 5-11 and they are currently battling their way through the tournament.

“The goals the team and I have for this season is to win the conference, win sectionals and hopefully win state. I feel that we are simply a better team than from last year. Our chemistry has gotten a lot better and I just think it has become more of a team atmosphere,” Pierce said.

Just like any team, Pierce believes they are not perfect.

“We need to learn how to communicate more constructively on the court and build confidence,” Pierce said.

As many teammates have said, confidence has never been in short supply for Pierce. His senior year has been exceptional and has open up the possibilities for his childhood dream of playing college basketball.

“My motivation to play definitely comes from my hope of playing in college. I have already been talking to Wright State University, Xavier University and Ohio Christian University. I’m leaning towards Wright state at this point,” Pierce said.

Pierce is leaning toward Wright State University because he found that he had a good chemistry with the campus and enjoyed the atmosphere.

Whether Pierce’s future is on the court or in the lab, many people are confident that he will succeed.

“There is no doubt that Dre will succeed and go onto greater things. He truly is a talented guy on and off the court. I know its cliché but the sky is the limit for this guy,” Brooks said.

Tolliver finishes fourth in FAVC

Joan Tolliver taking down her opponent.

By Dio Norkett – staff writer

After hitting the mat her freshman year, Joan Tolliver has proven herself as a female wrestler.

“My dad wrestled in high school and went to state twice. He’s my coach,” Tolliver said. “Everybody in my family wrestles so I figured I’d give it a shot.”

2011 graduate Danielle Hodge was the first prominent female to wrestle at WHS.

“Dani set the ground work for girls to come out. Joan came out her freshman year,” head coach Jeff Weiderhold said.

Being one of the only girls on the team, Tolliver has learned that wrestling, just like any sport, is an institution where competition is needed.

“Unfortunately she’s been behind Zach Marcella. They’re at the same weight, so most of the time she has to wrestle up a class,” Weiderhold said. “Not only does being a female, but also giving up 5-10 pounds to everybody she wrestles, makes it a lot tougher.”

Tolliver works hard to improve every match and her work ethic has not gone unnoticed.

“Joan has a big heart. She works hard at it and she gets better every time she gets on the mat,” Weiderhold said.

Tolliver has seen success because she knows the value of hard work and dedication.

“To do it you have to be really serious. It’s the most challenging sport I’ve ever done and I can probably say it’s the most challenging sport out there. So if you’re going to do it you’ve got to be really serious about it and you can’t give up easily because then you’re not going to get anything out of it,” Tolliver said.

The first time Tolliver said her hard work paid off was at the Xenia invitational last year when she faced off against a junior from Butlerville. Tolliver pulled ahead in the match 17-16 in the last 20 seconds.

“It was like halfway through the season and I hadn’t won anything yet. My dad was so proud of me. He picked me up and he started crying. It was like the best memory I have ever had,” Tolliver said.

This season Tolliver had 6 wins and 14 losses with 1 pin. This was an improvement from last season in which she went 3 and 10. Tolliver finished 4th at the Fort Ancient Valley Conference meet for the second year in a row.

Quallen wins State

Josh Quallen on the podium.

By Tyler Law – assistant sports editor

Josh Quallen won state in the Division II boys swimming in the 200 yard freestyle at Canton, Ohio on Feb. 23 and 24. Quallen was also runner-up in the 100 yard butterfly.

Last year, Quallen won state in the 200 yard freestyle as well and his objective this year was to defend his title as state champion.

At the districts swim meet in Oxford Ohio on Feb. 17, Quallen finished second overall in the 200 yard freestyle and first overall in the 100 butterfly in the southwest district. That performance would put Quallen in a prime position for the state meet during the following week.

Quallen was seated first going into the event. His main competitor was Cliff Goertemiller, one of Quallen’s team mates on The Dayton Raiders. At the meet his overall place was second to Goertemiller who had gotten first.

The 100 yard butterfly, the second individual event Quallen had at the southwest district meet, once again was up against one of his fellow team mates on the Raiders. Quallen had managed to get first in that event overall at the southwest district meet, and his team mate Buckley Powell had gotten second.

On the first day of the state swim meet, Quallen ended with a second place finish in prelims in the 200 yard freestyle and he ended with a second place finish in prelims in the 100 yard butterfly as well.

Quallen won the 200 yard freestyle with water splitting time: 1:39.93.

Quallen had held his title as the fastest Division II boy’s 200 yard freestyler in the state of Ohio, and became runner up in the 100 yard butterfly in division II boys swimming. Next year, Quallen will be there again, but not to get first in just one event but to get first in both of his events.

Taking a vow

Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams in The Vow.

By Nikita James – staff writer

“I vow to fiercely love you in all your forms, now and forever. I promise to never forget that this is a once in a lifetime love,” taken from “The Vow”, said by character Leo.

“The Vow”, starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams, hit theaters Feb. 10.

On opening weekend, the movie made $41.2 million and another $11 million on Valentine’s Day alone.

Based on a true story, “The Vow” is about a couple, Paige and Leo, who wed and are living the life as an artist and record producer. Not far into the marriage, the pair gets into a car accident that puts Paige into a coma and leaves Leo with only minor injuries.

Patiently, Leo awaits the conscious return of his wife, and when she finally wakes up, she has no idea who he is. Her last memory was being engaged to her ex-boyfriend, Jeremy.

Leo struggles to win his wife’s love back, which also affects his work ethic, social life and sanity.

But Paige learns devastating news from an old friend she runs into at the grocery store that actually leads her back to Leo.

The story is portrayed how it should be. It was touching, heart-warming and a tear jerker all mixed into one.

Although it would be classified as a “chick flick,” the touches of comedy throughout the film really brought it together. It will probably be one of those memorable romance films, right alongside “The Notebook”, in which McAdams also starred.

However, the real life couple, Kim and Krickitt Carpenter, do not seem so satisfied. They thought that the film did not add enough of their Christian beliefs that actually helped them through the struggle.

“The movie doesn’t talk about faith significantly, it would have been nice to see more of it,” Kim told Fox News.

She went on to say that the book her and her husband wrote about the incident was fully embedded with their faith, “but the movie does depict the inspiration of the battle to hang in there.”

All in all, the movie receives  4.5 out of 5 stars and two thumbs up. It was a very inspirational movie and proved that you should never give up on the ones you love, no matter how bumpy the road may get.

“I vow no matter what challenges might carry us apart that we will always find a way back to each other.”

Take a bite out of the hunger games

The official movie poster for The Hunger Games.

By Catherine Beach – staff writer

The Hunger Games: a book series declared the nest national phenomenon after Harry Potter and the Twilight Series. Written by Suzanne Collins and published in 2008, it has since commenced to become a worldwide craze.

First published in 2008, it was bumped from the original printing of 50,000 to 200,000 books. It was received with critical acclaim.

The Hunger Gamesis the first book in a trilogy, and it was followed by the books Catching Fire and Mockingjay.

The first book introduces the readers to a post-apocalyptic world. We begin the story entering into the world of the country of Panem. After a rebellion in the United States, which is what Panem once was, the country was divided into twelve districts.

Each district has a specific product that they create or bring from the Earth. These are then given to the Capitol, the head of the districts.

To remind the country of what they did with the rebellion, the Capitol holds an annual Hunger Games. These are held every year in a secret destination. The object of the game: to be the last one alive.

For every district, one boy and one girl are chosen by chance to participate. However, if one so wishes, another person could offer themselves up as a tribute.

The tributes would then get transported to the Capitol, where they will get residence in a swanky and high class place. They will train and show off their best skills to gain rank and to get the best sponsors.

These sponsors can send the tributes from their districts supplies during the games. These games are also televised and the citizens of Panem are forced to watch them.

Once they win by being the only one to survive, they get crowned by the President, gain residence in Victor’s Village, a tremendous amount of money and a monthly allowance of food and money.

This is the whole story of Katniss Everdeen, a girl who lives in the twelfth district, the mining district. Raised by her father to be huntress, even though it was illegal, she gains food for her family that way. Her father died, so she now lives with just her mother, an apothecary, and her sister, Primrose.

On the day of the drawing for the 74th Hunger Games, she and her friend, Gale, are contemplating running away. However, her sister is drawn to go to the Hunger Games, and Katniss offers herself up as tribute.

She is then sent to the games with Peeta Mellark, and the whole book follows their journey to survive.

Named a #1 New York Times Bestseller, highly acclaimed by Stephen King and Stephenie Meyer, The Hunger Gameshas been highly anticipated by many to be a movie.

Now being released in theaters on March 23, the movie boasts the names of Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth.

Just the trailer has enough information to show that this movie will be everything that the books were.

The Hunger Games is a book well loved by all, and the movie will most definitely be as good, if not better than the book.

Let the games begin, in the battle between the book and the movie!

Wilmington’s got talent

Brittany Likins's America's Got Talent audition ticket.

By Melanie Ferguson – news editor

Everyone has dreams, passions, and talents. It is very rare, however, for a person to get to pursue their dreams and develop their talents, especially at a young age.

Senior Brittany Lykins got the extraordinary chance to pursue her dreams: she auditioned for the hit television show, America’s Got Talent.

Lykins found out about the contest audition around the first of January after looking it up on the internet.

“I love singing so I decided to look for another way to get my name out there, and America’s Got Talent seemed like a great idea to me,” Lykins said.

To audition for the show, Lykins first had to fill out ten pages of paperwork about her life and why she wanted to “sing for the world.” Then, she had to fill out an online application and sign up for an audition on Feb. 3.

“I started singing as far back as I can remember…when I was a kid I always wanted to sing like Martina McBride because her voice was so powerful and moving to me,” Lykins said. “I have always dreamed of becoming a professional and singing for the world.”

Singing is a natural talent and passion for Lykins.

“I have never taken a voice lesson, just basic chorus at our high school,” Lykins said. “I think that being in band has really helped a lot with the musical aspect of me singing because I can read music which helps a lot.”

David Beck, the choir teacher at the school, met Lykins when she was in eighth grade.

“Brittany is not afraid to sing out. She has a very good ear, which allows her to stay in tune better than some of her peers. She has a low smoky sound, similar to Adele,” Beck said. “In the past two years, I’ve seen her come into her own and come out of her shell.”

Lykins has tried out for other competitions like the Miami Valley Talent Show, American Idol and others, but this competition “had a very good order in which they did things and was very organized.”

At the audition, Lykins sang in front of one of the producers of the show.

“The producer watched her monitor the whole time, and she had a camera sitting beside her filming us,” Lykins said.

As the first three people in her group sang, the producer watched her monitor.

“When the girl ahead of me sang, she did really well and I knew she would be fierce competition,” Lykins said. “The producer watched her and only glanced down at the computer monitor a couple of times.”

Lykins was the last girl in her group to sing.

“The producer watched me sing the whole time. She smiled when I was done and said that if there were further questions that she would call us back in, and then we would be told when we could leave,” Lykins said.

A little bit later, Lykins got called back in to sing again. She was the only one from her group.

“She told me that she couldn’t believe I had such a strong voice at such a young age and that most people spend their whole lives trying to achieve what I already have,” Lykins said.

According to the producer, if Lykins makes it any farther into the audition she will receive a call back at the end of the month. So far she has made it to round two.

“Overall, it was so much fun to sing in front of the judge and I’m praying that I make the next round,” Lykins said. “If nothing happens, I will still feel like I have made an accomplishment though because it’s another experience and I learn better technique.”

Taking a bite out of the best taco

Taco Bell's tacos.

By Emma Blanchard – opinions editor

Every culture has a food product that they are commonly known for: Asian cultures are known for their noodles and spring rolls, France is known for their smelly cheese and Mexico is known for their juicy tacos and their fruity margaritas.

Mexican culture is full of color and flavor and the same goes for the food. Each time it is a new experience and a new expression of flavor and character is created. Here in the states, it can be hard to find that delicious Mexican flavor found in fresh tacos off the streets.

Tacos are at every fiesta and are common in the fast food industry, Taco Bell. Food chains such as Chipotle try making a faster, better quality way of eating tacos.

Locally, El Dorado gives the community the closest Mexican food experience north of the border. In Mexico, taco stands are on every corner, filling the streets with the aromas of cooked meat, cilantro, limes and fresh tortillas.

Which producer of tacos creates the best overall experience: good customer service, quality food and best prices? Comparing these three is no use when the real delicious tacos are found down over the border, but since Mexico is a plane ride away, staying in Wilmington is the only option.

Taco Bell, although convenient in many aspects, lack in the customer service area. They recently remodeled the Wilmington Taco Bell to make it more up-to-date, but the employees are not enthusiastic and do not make a pleasant experience. It seems to be inconvenient to the employees to have customers.

The tacos lack in seasoning and are always the same; there is a lack of flavor expression. Mexican food is all about the development of flavor, creating a delicious masterpiece. Their cheap prices are appealing, but the aftermath of the food left costumers with gassy bubbles and indigestion, there was even consideration of renaming it “Toxic Hell.”

Chipotle gives a fresher approach to the taco, as they make it quick and convenient but also flavorful.  Using fresh ingredients and a “build-it-yourself” mentality creates new interesting flavors.

Their overpriced menu and lack of customer service made the experience unfulfilling. Although delicious; the overall experience was less then satisfying. They are more famous for their burritos or bowls, so maybe they need to work more on diverse tacos and the atmosphere of their franchise.

El Dorado creates an authentic Mexican dining experience. The waiters are nice and willing to make every customer full and happy.  They imitate the more expensive dining experience of Mexico without raising the prices even during the rough economical community.

The more rustic experience from street tacos is missing, but El Dorado’s is the closest reproduction of the real Mexican taco.

In the search for an overall good Mexican experience, featuring good customer service, quality food and great prices, El Dorado is the answer. They create the closest Mexican experience without getting on a plane and flying over the border.
